Mendocino is our retreat that we take ever year for the last 30 years. The rugged and wild coast boasts it's beautiful views of the Pacific, and literally, you are hooked!!! The wind is harsh at times, and if you stick around long enough, the day unfolds with clouds, fog, mist, and an aroma that I wish I could bottle and sell. The magic of Mendocino...it is apparent that it is a place which hypnotizes you, and leaves you with a melancholy feeling if you dare to leave...and there are those who get caught in the spell of it's magic powers, and STAY. Being so isolated along the coast, you have to make a commitment to make the 11 hour drive from Los Angeles, but we break up the trip by stopping in Napa...another fine California treasure. From San Francisco, it's 3.5 hours. The Architecture of the quaint village takes you back in time, but times were never easy, or quiet in Mendocino. It was a lumber town, a fishing port, and the weather forces you to be strong to face the elements. There is great History along the Northern Coast of California. If you have never visited there before, I can only say that you have missed a beautiful place. There is hiking, scuba, kayaking, horseback riding on the beach, canoeing, photography, Art, and theatre, and "Old Fashioned Parades" on Holidays. It was the fastest 11 days we ever took. That's the problem...it's never long enough. I have been captured by the spell of this small Village of Mendocino. I am happiest when I am surrounded by Mother Nature, and there...Mother Nature never disappoints. This year I saw Wild Turkeys for the first time. It was rather exciting for me. I watched a Osprey catch a rodent, and I had a conversation with a deer. We decided not to take one of our favorite walks in Caspar because of Mountain Lion Warnings, but for one year, I would pass on that particular trail.
